Borrowing library materials

Faculty and staff may borrow books from Mantor Library and other URSUS libraries (the UMaine system libraries, Maine State Library, Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library, and the Bangor Public Library) for an entire semester. Renewals may be allowed on Mantor Library items borrowed for a semester; items borrowed for a semester from other URSUS libraries are not renewable. In addition, these items may be subject to recall by the lending library.

Items borrowed from MaineCat libraries have a loan period of 4 weeks with one two-week renewal, and those obtained through interlibrary loan may have different borrowing periods depending on the policies of the lending libraries, so check with the Mantor Library staff when picking up those items.

Exceptions include: Only ten (10) juvenile or young adult books and five (5) compact discs, videos, or DVDs can be borrowed at a time. Videos and DVDs circulate for two weeks with no renewals. Reference materials and periodicals do not circulate.

Requesting materials from other libraries

If you need books and articles Mantor Library does not own or provide access to, chances are, we can get them for you through interlibrary loan. For more information, visit the Interlibrary Loan page or speak with a library staff member.

Research support

The library contains books, journals, magazines, newspapers, films, and music in support of the curriculum at UMF. We also offer online access to reference resources and thousands of journals, magazines, and newspapers through a variety of subscription databases.

Friendly and knowledgeable library staff and student workers are available to assist youwith locating materials, using the equipment, or if you have any other questions. Please feel free to ask for help.

Course Reserves

Library Instruction

Mantor Library’s Information Literacy Program provides an opportunity to integrate library instruction into courses taught by faculty at UMF. Its goal is to foster information literacy by helping students build good research and critical thinking skills, which include the ability to understand how information is organized, how to find relevant quality information for their needs, how to evaluate information resources, and how to use information in an ethical manner. Instruction sessions are held in the library’s 20-computer Peter Mills Electronic Classroom or a librarian can come to your classroom.

Instruction offered ranges from basic library orientation to research skill sessions tailored to the subject matter or assignments in a course. Library staff can design advanced instruction for research or upper level courses in any subject, covering advanced search skills, print and electronic indexes, research databases, and effective search strategies using subject headings and thesauri. The staff can also work with faculty to integrate information literacy into a course by assisting with planning course assignments, preparing library resources for Blackboard or a course Web page, and serving as research liaisons for the students throughout the semester.

Individual sessions covering any of the library’s resources can also be arranged for faculty upon request.

For more information on the Information Literacy Program or to schedule a session in the classroom, contact Laurie MacWhinnie (x7219 or macwhinn@maine.edu) at the Mantor Library.
