We’re fully aware of the fact that our library doesn’t have everything you’re going to need for your research. But we promise to do everything we can to make sure you have access to the materials you want. When you need a book or article that Mantor doesn’t have in its buildings or online databases, there are two other places you can look.
If you still can’t find it, please use our Interlibrary Loan Form to place a request. (But check the following first! they’ll usually arrive more quickly, and with more flexibility.)
Ursus (the University of Maine system catalog)
First of all, please remember you can request any item you find in URSUS–regardless of which library it “lives” in. To do this, look for the “request” button on the URSUS page. It looks like this:
That will take you to a page where you can enter your name, library barcode (the one we gave you) and the library where you want to pick up the book (probably UMF). Voila! In three to five days, you’ll have your requested item. It’s like magic, except without the top hat. Or the wand.
Here, Kitty Kitty!
“But wait!” you say. “What if the thing I want isn’t in URSUS?” No worries. After you’ve searched URSUS and come up empty handed, look around on the results screen for the MaineCat button. Once again, here it is so you can know what to look for: (Go ahead and click it now. It’ll open up a new window for you that will let you follow along with the directions.)
When you click this button, it will search for the same thing you just searched for in URSUS. If you find it in MaineCat, click on the hyperlink that says “REQUEST THIS ITEM” in the record you found. Assuming there’s a copy available, you’ll be taken to a screen that asks you to select your library. Select “UM Farmington.” Then, enter your name and barcode along with the library where you want to pick up the item, and in about a week, it’ll be here in Mantor for your retrieval.
License to ILL
Finally, when you’ve exhausted the other options but are still gamely trying to find that source, we offer Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Why do we save this for last? Because it takes longer for the materials to arrive, and we know a lot of the time you need those sources now. Through ILL, you have access to libraries across the country. Simply fill out this form online (printed forms are available at the front desk of Mantor), and in three days to three weeks, your materials will arrive. We will email you when your item arrives.
ILL materials need to be renewed through Mantor Library. Please contact us to renew them.
On the ILL form, you’ll no doubt notice there is an option to select the maximum amount you are willing to pay to receive the item. 98% of the time, ILL will be free for you. But on the off chance that it’s not–and you don’t want to pay for the item–then just leave it selected to $0. If you really want it, select one of the other options.
For all of the options, please remember you may be subject to fines if you return the items late.
