Starting Your Research

The Reference Department staff has put together the following guides to help you get started with your research:

Getting Started includes general information about using library resources for your research, finding good information on the Web, and incorporating information into a class paper or project.

Using Library Resources - explains how to access URSUS (the University of Maine System's shared online catalog) to find books and the Indexes and Databases resources to locate journal articles. (PDF document)

Search Basics - more information about choosing search terms, formatting a search statement, and choosing appropriate resources.

How to Read a Database Record - explains  how to read the results from a database search.

How Can I Find?...Books/Journal Articles - lists the steps for requesting books from other libraries (using the URSUS and MaineCat requestor option) and provides instructions for obtaining the full text of journal articles. (PDF document)

Printing and Copying - explains the costs and options for printing and copying in the Mantor Library. (PDF document)

Course Guides are for students taking UMF courses that have assigned liaison librarians. The librarians have collaborated with faculty to provide library instruction as a part of the course.
