Getting a Library Card
UMF Patrons
If you're a UMF student, faculty or staff member, simply present your UMF ID to the Access Services desk, and we'll provide you with a barcode. Please note that it can sometimes take a few days for your barcode to be registered with the system (which gives you access to databases from off campus, as well as allows you to request materials), so it's a good idea to get a barcode as soon as possible--even before you start your research.
Courtesy Card Patrons
Members of the community who are 12 years old and older may request a free Courtesy Card, which will allow them to borrow materials from the regular collection at Mantor Library.
Beginning on April 22, 2008, all applications for Mantor Library courtesy cards must be accompanied by a photo ID AND proof of current mailing address. Proof of current mailing address may consist of a rent receipt, a utility bill, a tax bill, or a recent piece of mail received by the applicant. In the absence of such proof, the applicant shall be advised to mail him/herself a postcard . . . once received, it can serve as proof of address.
A driver’s license is acceptable as photo ID, but not as proof of current mailing address. Checks, business cards, and other similar items are also unacceptable since it is possible for someone to move many times without updating the address on these documents. Please note: in the case of an applicant who is personally known to the staff member issuing the card, the photo ID requirement may be waived, but not the proof of current mailing address.
All applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal adult guardian. Parents should be aware that borrowers are financially responsible for lost and or damaged library materials. In the case of minors, this responsibility falls to the parents. In addition, parent should be aware that privacy regulations prohibit the disclosure of the minor’s borrowing history (even to his/her parents) without a signed consent form or a court order.
Applicants under the age of 18 (or their parent or guardian) must be able to provide proof of the applicant’s age and current mailing address. Photo IDs may be waived for applicants between the ages of 12 and 17; however, when this requirement is waived, the parent or guardian must present his/her photo ID.
Existing courtesy card patrons who need to replace their cards because of loss or damage, must also present a photo ID and proof of current mailing address. New cards will not be issued to courtesy card patrons who owe fines or replacement charges until these have been paid.
