How To Find Journals, Magazines and Newspapers
To find out if Mantor Library has the journal, magazine or newspaper you're looking for, it's best to use the "Journals/Newspapers" tab on the library's home page. (To search the entire URSUS collection for journals, use the URSUS link, also found on the library's home page. You can also browse a listing of all the periodicals the library physically owns here.) If your search is successful, check to see whether the year and issue or volume you need is available. Pay attention to the following:
What Mantor Has
Look for the entry with FAR Periodicals as the Location. Those are the ones that are in the Mantor Library's collection.
Even if Mantor subscribes to a journal, it may not have all of the years or issues of a title. When you have a citation to an article, look first at the dates of the journal in the Mantor collection. If the library has the date you need, proceed to step 2.
What Format It is
Not all of the journals, magazines, and newspapers will be in print, so it is important to check the format, which will determine where in the library the item is stored. Formats include print, microform and microfiche. Refer to the Mantor Journal & Newspaper Locations list below for more information.
Where It's Stored
Depending on the age of a print item, it may be in the stacks near the reference collection, in the Periodical Basement, or in Dead Storage. The older an item is the farther away it will be:
- Current 3 years = reference stacks
- Older the 3 years = Periodical Basement
- Older than 5 years (selected titles) = Dead Storage
Some recent back issues of print newspapers are in the Periodical Basement; others will be on microfilm.
