Literacy Projects
BIO 100: Foundations of
Science: Biology
Library session (45 mins.): An assignment-specific session consisting of a
brief lecture and demonstration on locating scholarly journal articles and
finding images from Web with a worksheet exercise. The session concludes with
a mini PowerPoint showing how the information found in the demonstrations can
be incorporated into a multimedia project using proper citation. A Biology
Resource Guide with recommended databases and search tips is also provided.
EDU 125: Introduction to
Theory and Practice in Elementary Education
Library session (75 mins.): Lecture and demonstration and a worksheet activity
covering essential library resources for the two key assignments:

- “Hot Topics” in education term paper
The two ILP Team members are also the liaison
librarians for the classes and assist the EDU 125 students throughout the
semester. Library resources are available to students via a Web page (http://library.umf.maine.edu/EDU125/index.html) linked to the class Blackboard.
HTY 290: Historical Methods
History research class required for all history majors. Information literacy
is integrated into the course assignments and there are 2 library sessions (2
1/2 hours each):
- Session 1: Lecture and demonstration
covering researching a topic, using WorldCat, and finding scholarly book
reviews; a hands-on book review exercise; and an accompanying Web tutorial
and worksheet form.
- Session 2: Lecture and demonstration on
primary sources with accompanying PowerPoint; advanced searching on the Web;
and a primary sources exercise with an online worksheet/assessment form.
Library resources from both sessions are
available to students through a Web page (
http://library.umf.maine.edu/HTY290/ ) linked from the faculty members’
Web pages for the class. The two ILP Team members are also the liaison
librarians for the classes and assist the HTY 290 students throughout the
semester.
HTY 230: American Colonial History
A collaborative project with instruction sessions by the Library, Computer
Center, Media Center, and Writing Center designed to assist students with
their class project: to prepare a Web page on an American Colonial history
topic of their choice.
2 library sessions (50 mins. each):
- Session 1: Researching a topic, searching
for books and journal articles, appropriate use of information.
- Session 2: Evaluation of resources, finding
and using images, searching the Web, hands-on Web evaluation exercise.
HEA: Health
Incorporation of library instruction in multiple community and public health
classes. Courses include introductory classes (HEA 112, HEA 113), intermediate
(HEA 211), and upper level (HEA 310). Library session (varies, from 50 – 90
mins.): Lecture and demonstration of public health related databases and Web
resources. Students are given free time for individual research during the
sessions with a librarian available for assistance.
