The UMF Archives, located in the basement of Mallett Hall, collects materials related
to the history of the University as well as faculty and alumni publications. Patrons wishing to
use archival materials may fill out the proper form at the Reference Desk. Please note
that there is a three day waiting period for all requests. Archival materials do not
circulate but must be used in the library.
Course reserve materials are located at Access Services. Items are placed on
Course Reserve by faculty members who wish to ensure equal access to all students taking
the course. For this reason, restrictions are placed on the circulation of Reserve items.
Some, including all videos, must be used in the Library; others must be used in the
library during the day, but may be taken out one hour before the Library closes; these
must be returned within one hour of the Librarys opening on the following day. A few
Reserve items may be taken out for one week. In the latter two cases, materials returned
late are subject to overdue fines. If you have questions about how long a Reserve item may
be used, please ask a staff person at the time you check the material out.
Please note: a student ID is required for ALL Reserve items, even those
that do not leave the Library.
There are approximately 550 journals in
our print collection, with thousands of additional titles available
full-text online. The current three years are shelved in alphabetical order by
title in the Reference Area. Back issues of titles are kept either in microform or paper
format. Check URSUS, our online catalog, for titles,
holdings, and format of periodicals held by the Library. Articles in periodicals can be
found by searching the online
Indexes and Databases.
Newspapers
The most recent issues are kept in the Browsing Room. The current two months are
located in the Periodicals Basement. Earlier issues of selected newspapers, such as The
Franklin Journal, The New York Times, and the Portland Press Herald, are
available on microfilm located in the Reference Area.
An area located on the mezzanine where our audio cassettes,
VHS tapes, compact
discs, and DVDs are shelved. These materials can be checked out.
Also, this area houses our VHS tape and DVD viewing equipment and a
media viewing room that seats 6-8 people and may be scheduled by
class groups or campus organizations to view DVDs or VHS tapes. Contact
froberts@maine.edu three days in
advance to book a time. To view the room schedule, see the online
calendar.
