A collection of posters created by UMF
students on various topics relating to the death penalty including race (and
age and gender) of death row inmates; average educational level of death row
inmates; innocent people sentenced to die (and subsequently executed); death
row inmates who have been exonerated; the presidential candidates' stance on
the death penalty; foreign countries and the death penalty; death penalty
states vs. non-death penalty states; costs associated with administering the
death penalty; average length of time an inmate spends on death row before
execution; and methods of execution.

Contest Begins!
Pick up a word search at the Access Services Desk, Mantor Library or
print it out online. Locate words relating to

submit your entry to the library. All completed entries will be put in a drawing for a
$10 gift certificate to the Mountain View Chocolate Shoppe! Contest

"A Lesson Before Dying," the film
adaptation of the novel

This film won two Emmy awards in 1999:
Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a
Miniseries or Movie. The film was nominated for three additional Emmy
awards: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie (Don Cheadle,
who plays Grant Wiggins), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or
Movie (Cicely Tyson, who plays Tante Lou), and Outstanding Directing for a
Miniseries or Movie. Rated PG-13.

"Dead Man Walking"

"This acclaimed film traces the
relationship between a death-row inmate and the local nun to whom he turns
for spiritual guidance in the days leading up to his scheduled execution.
Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn) has been convicted of the rape and murder of
two young lovers and is awaiting execution. Susan Sarandon plays Sister
Helen Prejean, a nun who faces a moral crisis as she tries to reconcile her
anti-death penalty views with the truth of Poncelet's actions and the pain
